On This Day

1399: Henry IV becomes the King of England after the abdication of his cousin Richard II.  Henry IV was the son of Edward III’s third son John of Gaunt and with his ascension to the throne it laid the foundation of the Lancastrian dynasty and the seeds of the War of the Roses.
